2007 Annual Grantee Meeting
Active Living by Design held its Fourth Annual Grantee Meeting in Chapel Hill, NC from June 12-15, 2007. The meeting convened Active Living by Design and Healthy Eating by Design grantees and members of their community partnerships, other active living and healthy eating advocates, funders and other special guests at the historic Carolina Inn on the University of North Carolina’s campus. The three-day meeting provided an excellent opportunity for participants to network, exchange ideas and lessons learned, and celebrate their successes.

With two pre-conference field trips and a workshop, three general sessions, 12 share fairs, 12 sessions addressing lessons from the field, consultations focused on communications and sustainability, and a few surprises, the agenda reflected our continued focus on active living and healthy eating. Many of the sessions were by members of the ALbD and HEbD community partnerships, reinforcing the assets and wisdom residing within this vibrant and growing learning network. Opportunities for routine and organized physical activity, breaks for healthy eating, and some fun and creative competitive events provided additional opportunities to “walk the talk” and connect with peers from across the country.
Share Fairs:
Back by popular demand, the share fair provided an opportunity to share and learn about specific active living initiatives, challenges and successes. In group sessions, community partnerships highlighted a particular activity, event, tool or program they developed as part of their Active Living by Design or Healthy Eating by Design initiative. The goal was to facilitate the exchange of experiences and ideas on pre-selected topics through brief presentations by community partnerships and interactive follow-up dialogue facilitated by a group leader.
Lessons from the Field:
Facilitated discussion sessions provided an opportunity to explore broad topics more deeply with Active Living by Design and Healthy Eating by Design colleagues and professionals in the field. The sessions gave participants an opportunity to share stories, methods, challenges, ideas, and address their concerns and interests related to several priority subjects. Knowledgeable resource people helped provide basic knowledge where needed and advice or resource referrals upon request. Partiipants assumed responsibility for meeting their own learning objectives and supporting those of others within this format.
Physical Activity and Healthy Eating:
Physical Activity and Healthy Eating opportunities included volleyball, frisbee, bicycling, bird walks and an organized jog and yoga each morning. In addition, there was a Mural Walk, Scavenger Hunt and a very special ‘Healthy Iron Chef’ competition for participants.
