2005 Annual Grantee Meeting

2005 Annual Grantee Meeting
Active Living by Design held its 2nd Annual Grantee Meeting in Chapel Hill, NC from May 17-20 2005.  The meeting brought together over 110 people at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.  Attendees included representatives from all 25 ALbD community partnerships, two ALbD Jumpstart grantees, distinguished presenters, active living funders and guests.  The three-day conference provided an opportunity for the participants to exchange ideas and experiences about ALbD and the active living movement.

The participants worked on building a shared understanding of what it takes to increase physical activity through changes in community design. In planning the meeting, we structured the format to reflect our participants’ interests and requests.  We scheduled more hands-on, experiential learning as well as some down time to “walk the talk.” The end result was a framework for exploration that allowed our community partnerships to share questions, solutions, challenges and successes with each other.

The Grantee Meeting featured Share Fairs, Expert Roundtables, Open Space, and plenty of time for various types of physical activity.

Share Fairs:

Share Fairs provided a much anticipated opportunity to share and learn about specific active living initiatives, challenges and successes in ALbD communities.  Each session featured presentations by two community partnerships highlighting a particular activity, event, tool or program that they have successfully developed and an open discussion about the initiative.

Expert Roundtables:

Expert Roundtables included knowledgeable resource people who framed each discussion and provided professional advice on the participants’ interests and concerns.

Open Space:

Open Space technology enabled self-organizing groups of all sizes to deal with complex issues in a short period of time by encouraging openness, passion and leadership to emerge naturally from the group.

Physical Activity:

Physical Activity opportunities included volleyball, frisbee, bicycling, and an “active living” scavenger hunt.
