Tohono O'odham, AZ
about
The Tohono O’odham Nation is located in southwestern Arizona. It spreads across the Sonoran Desert and borders the U.S./Mexico international boundary in a complex topography that ranges from flat, acidic soil to slightly mountainous terrain. It is the second largest Native American reservation in the country—measuring approximately the size of Connecticut—and it is also the poorest. Tohono O’odham’s 20,000 residents face a range of problems—from low high school graduation rates to a fading collective memory and the highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the world.
