Making Friends and Getting Fit…In That Order
Being a member of a senior walking group has its benefits, such as weekly physical activity, new friendships, expert advice on fitness and equipment, and an occasional visit from the mayor. Seniors in an Orlando, Florida, walking group were recently featured on the local news and in local papers following a visit from Mayor Buddy Dyer during their weekly walk.
Get Active Orlando, an Active Living by Design community partnership housed in the City of Orlando's planning department, is responsible for organizing the popular walking program. The partnership found funding for the senior walking program through the Track Shack Foundation, an organization that aims to promote health and fitness through community programs. The partnership used the money to hire a professional walking coach. The coach, a retired Orlando Police Department detective, is focusing on helping the seniors achieve their individual fitness goals. Due to the early success of the program, the Get Active Orlando partnership is already applying for another round of grant funding.
